Winter 2026 has been fairly good for most of Peninsular India. Interior areas, particularly over the Deccan Plateau, has seen cooler than normal nights. The plains of TN have also had a comfortable period since the turn of the new year. Most parts of the state have had pleasant day time conditions with cool night time temperatures.
As the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end”. Winter 2026 is also expected to gradually fade away soon. The pleasant winter weather is likely to continue for the next week to 10 days. Peninsular West coast has already started seeing afternoon temperatures climb up. Coastal Karnataka and Kerala has already seen max temperatures inch up towards 36 / 37°C. Peninsular West coast has been the hottest region of the Indian sub-continent for the past couple of weeks.
Weather models indicate interior areas of Peninsular India may see increase in afternoon temperatures from next week. While nights are likely to remain cool and pleasant days are set to get warmer. Effectively this could also be the last phase of active winter conditions for most parts of Peninsular India. Interior areas may see minimum temperatures stay 2 – 4°C below normal for the next 7 to 10 days. Even coastal areas like Chennai may see minimum temperatures dip a degree or two below normal.
As afternoons get warmer over interior areas the diurnal difference may also start increasing. The increase in diurnal difference, night time temperatures and day time temperatures, also in a way indicate the last phase of winter. The rest of the Indian sub-continent moves onto spring mode during this time. Peninsular India shifts though shifts to summer mode over many places with very little spring weather. On the rain front nothing much is on the cards except for some rains over South TN later next week.
