Reading Time: 3 minutes

Last night saw once again parts of North Tamil Nadu receive spells of rains with most parts of Chennai receiving moderate rains.  Meenambakkam recorded 17 mm while Nungambakkam recorded 9 mm rains.  The catchment areas of Puzhal, Chembarambakkam also received good rains.  This could be the last spell of rains from the West for Chennai as the winds change to Easterlies indicating the arrival of Northeast Monsoon soon.

The Depression over Arabian Sea has intensified into a Deep Depression with IMD expecting it to become a Marginal Cyclone over the next 24 hours.  As it moves in a W/NW direction Peninsular India would undergo a change of its own as the lower level winds slowly change to Northerlies / Northeasterlies from the current Westerlies / Southwesterlies.

Thanks to the confluence of the Easterlies & Westerlies interior places of Peninsular India is expected get widespread rains with some places expected to get heavy rains as well.  The districts of Bellary, Hubli – Dharwad, Bengaluru & Tumakuru could witness spells of heavy rains while in the Rayalseema region places in Anantapur, Kurnool & Chittoor districts could receive heavy spells of rains. The Highrainges of Kerala around Pathanamthitta & Idukki districts could see spells of heavy rains as well due to lower level westerlies carrying moisture.

Chennai Weather Update: In what was possibly a parting spell of rains from Southwest Monsoon Chennai received fairly widespread moderate rains over all areas though the places around OMR possibly got lesser rains.  As the winds change to Easterlies we could expect the rains to take a small break now as the Northeast Monsoon sets its own wheels in motion over the next few days.  Chennai could see cloudy weather and occasional passing showers in the morning till about 10 AM after which we could see a day time temperature of around 34°C.  Prospects of rains appear less today with the winds expected to change one or two areas to the West could see passing showers at best.
