In what was welcome relief Heavy spell of rains lashed Chennai & surrounding areas around Midnight. While some isolated spells of rains happened around evening, as the night came on the good times began for Chennai once again with the developing thunderstorms converging near the Chennai coast resulting in an intense spell of rains for more than half an hour in many parts of the city.
Southwest Monsoon Update: The Monsoon trough continues to be parked at the foothills of the Himalayas with the rains confined to East India and North East India continuing to be under very heavy spell of rains. The situation could potentially change with the possibility of a UAC developing over North Bay from the North-South Monsoon trough over East India. Peninsular India benefited from the Wind Convergence induced instability with rains over many places of Rayalseema & South Karnataka region along with North Tamil Nadu. These rains are expected to continue for a couple of more days with the rain bands expected to shift slightly to the South compared to yesterday. West Coast of Peninsular India will receive moderately heavy spells of rains in a few places as well.
Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Partly cloudy skies over North Tamil Nadu with some places receiving isolated spells of early morning rains. As the day progresses more places along North Coastal TN could receive rains with one or two places receiving very heavy spells of rains as the wind convergence induced instability provides conducive environment for the development of thunderstorms over most parts of North TN. South TN could generally see clear skies with one or two places getting isolated convective thunderstorms in the evening.
Chennai Weather Update: A very pleasant morning on the cards as the lingering remnants of overnight thunderstorms provide passing showers in one or two areas. The day could potentially see partly cloudy skies with temperatures around 35°C though due to cloud cover humidity could be high. Towards evening / night Chennai could potentially see some heavy spells of rains in many parts of the city. It is advisable to carry your raincoat / umbrella if you are expected to come back slightly late from the office or after a Friday night party.
