As we get to the early days of May pretty much every year we start hearing Agni Natchathiram take center stage in Tamil News media. This is a period of about 3 weeks bringing supposedly peak heat to Tamil Nadu. Over the years many attempts have been made to explain how peak summer does not coincide for all places at the same time. For example places like Kanyakumari district in South TN sees early summer. On the contrary Chennai and surrounding places in North TN is a late bloomer to summer. Chennai’s peak summer is typically just before the onset of Southwest monsoon. A period when westerlies are strong and sea breeze goes missing.
Nevertheless we continue to have this discussion every year. So when you cant beat them you join them. So we will use Agni Natchathiram and Amritavarshini, as metaphors to explain what is expected of weather. Incidentally in the film Agni Natchathiram the Maestro used Amritavarshini to pen one of the most popular songs. Maestro brought a bit of fresh air through the song to the heated battle in the movie. Similarly a spell of rains from a developing circulation is likely to keep a check on the heat.
Weather models indicate a cyclonic circulation may deepen into a possible LPA over the low latitudes of Bay later this week. We may have to wait to see the eventual journey and end game of the circulation. But there is certainly lot of reasons to look forward to the early journey of this circulation. A circulation in South bay is likely to bring Easterlies over Coastal TN. This will play a role in keeping temperatures under check.
Additionally it is likely to also bring some rains to most parts of the state as well. While interior areas may benefit anyhow from summer thunderstorms coastal places like Chennai need some luck. This circulation may provide that luck to bring much needed rains and respite from the heat. At this point of time there is no point in looking at rainfall quantum though Ensembles do indicate decent numbers. From today we may see gradual reduction in heat with rains likely to pick up from 8th or 9th of May.
First week of Agni Natchathiram 2026 likely to be see less than normal heat. Fingers crossed a spell of rains may be on the cards for Coastal TN.
