Reading Time: 2 minutes

Widespread Rains were recorded all across Tamil Nadu yesterday with thunderstorms drenching many places in the Interior Places of the state.  While coastal areas missed out mostly except for Pamban of Ramanathapuram district which recorded 131 mm (to be verified) till 5:30 AM.  Vellore, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore & Villupuram districts recorded the heaviest rains yesterday.

More than 50 places have recorded above 10 mm rains according preliminary rainfall data.  A spell which started on the Republic Day continued for 3 days with each day the rainfall intensity and spatial distribution increasing peaking possibly yesterday.  Not often do you see such widespread rains during off season time particularly if one were to look at the pattern of how the interior places scored far higher than coastal areas. In another good development even places like Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Namakkal in the West Interior districts also recorded rains in quite a few places

Whether the rains are a boon or bane only time will tell and possibly will depend on how much crop area under cultivation and ready were harvested and how much were left out.  Nevertheless these rains will certainly help in ground water recharge and improving aquifer situation across many districts of the state.

In a cruel twist of irony Chennai and Kanyakumari are possibly the biggest miss from this rain spell with both these districts pretty much seeing only cloudy skies and very little rains.  While Chennai at least saw some bit of isolated rains Kanyakumari ended up with near bone dry conditions.

From today the rains are expected to ease with South Tamil Nadu possibly seeing spells of rains with moderate to heavy spells in one or two places along the Western Ghats today.  Possibly by tomorrow we will start seeing more drier conditions signifying the onset of dry weather season for the state.
