Temperatures to Ease over most of Tamil Nadu

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The summer heat that had gripped most of Tamil Nadu and in particular Northern parts of the state is expected to ease its grip slowly from now on.  Yesterday saw both Chennai observatories record lower than 40°C for the first time in almost a week.  Vellore, Tiruttani & Karur were the only observatories in the state to cross 40°C yesterday.

Numerical models indicate most parts of the state to be closer to normal temperatures except for few isolated pockets along the South Coastal area and in Vellore, Tiruvallur & Kanchipuram district.  Chennai could see a moderately warm day with possibly sea breeze making an early entry and keeping temperatures under check.  The day time high for Chennai could be around 37/38°C possibly.  A robust sea breeze is expected to move on shore during the afternoon which could possibly trigger some isolated thunderstorms over North Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Southwest Monsoon continues to be active over Kerala and parts of Karnataka.  Thanks to the presence of off shore trough running from South Konkan to Kerala coast today also fairly heavy spells of rains could be expected in most parts of Kerala & South Karnataka.  A few places could get very heavy spells as well in these areas.  A little further up north under wind instability induced conditions could trigger pre monsoon thunderstorms over parts of North Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telengana.  One or two places in coastal Odisha could see fairly intense afternoon thunderstorms as well.

As far as Tamil Nadu goes we could expect some rains in the interior places particularly in the West Interior parts of the state around Vellore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode & Nilgiris.  One or two places near the Western Ghats could see moderate to heavy rains in Theni, Dindigul districts while isolated light rains may happen over Delta districts as well.
