Tamil Nadu sees good day of Rains

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Many parts of Tamil Nadu got good rains yesterday evening as convective thunderstorms developed triggered by the strong sea breeze front which was absent for the last few days on account of stronger Westerlies.  In particular Thanjavur, Pudukkottai & Sivagangai, Cuddalore and parts of Madurai district enjoyed good rains.  While the western and norther suburbs of Chennai recorded light rains areas closer to the coast missed out on the rains.  The COMK weather station in Anna Nagar recorded 5 mm while the IMD AWS in Nungambakkam recorded 1 mm from the evening rains.

Peninsular India is expected to see another unstable day in the atmosphere as northern parts of Deccan Plateau is likely to come under good rains thanks to favorable wind pattern triggered by the Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation over Odisha / Chhattisgarh region and an associated trough that runs East to West from there till South Konkan coast.  Isolated places in Coastal Andhra Pradesh & parts of Interior Maharashtra is likely to see fairly heavy rains under this wind instability.

While isolated rains are likely to happen over parts of Tamil Nadu the key to watch out if the effect of the UAC induced instability drifts down to the south marginally compared to what the models estimate currently.  If this happens possibly Chennai could fall in line for a spell of moderate evening thunderstorms later in the day.  Nevertheless there exists a fair possibility of some thunderstorms developing in North TN which is expected to move West to East giving some rainfall possibilities to places in and around Chennai.
