Isolated Thunderstorms in North Tamil Nadu to continue

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The last couple of days have seen Chennai and surrounding areas of North Tamil Nadu record some sharp spell of showers as Chennai Nungambakkam recorded 34 mm from the yesterday evening spells as places in the Central & Northern parts of the metropolis enjoyed the better spells.  Most of the areas recorded their heaviest spells around 4 PM in the evening as storms intensified closer to the coast.

The COMK weather station at Anna Nagar recorded 27 mm last evening while hardly half a km away the weather station of fellow weather blogger Shivakumar recorded 31 mm indicating the scattered nature of the storms. Similar story shows up between the IMD Nungambakkam observatory and the Kea Weather station which is again less than a km away recording variances in the rainfall data.

Things look good for another day of convective thunderstorms over a few parts of Tamil Nadu.  While one or two places in South Tamil Nadu could see late afternoon thunderstorms the action could be focused once again in and around North Tamil Nadu.  The stretch between Puducherry and SHAR are well placed to benefit from these evening thunderstorms.  Aided by the southwest tilting upper Air Cyclonic Circulation in North Bay there is going to be fair bit of upper level moisture which will enable these thunderstorms to develop.  Models are also indicating a robust sea breeze front to move in today creating necessary instability in the atmosphere for the storms to grow.  All in all another good day likely for North Coastal TN. As has been the case for the last couple of days except the storms to move fast hence intense short bursts is likely to be the order of the day with fair chance for Chennai as well.

Models indicate some increased rainfall activity over  West coast in particular Coastal Karnataka & parts of North Kerala though this unlikely to be heavy nevertheless a region that has been seeing subdued rainfall activity for nearly a month will take what ever comes in their way.
