As the Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal weakened into a Trough of Low parts of Delta districts recorded heavy overnight rains with Karaikal recording the fist 10 cm of 2018 accumulating 101 mm up to 5:30 AM today morning. While many parts of the state recorded light rains under the influence of the Low Pressure a few places recorded moderate to heavy rains possibly under the influence of converging low level winds
In our post dated 5th January we had mentioned about the possibility of heavy rains in a narrow band of area on 9th / 10th on account of the converging low altitude winds. The stretch between Vedaranyam and Chidambaram has seen a few places record heavy overnight spells. Chennai had to satisfy with occasional drizzle which was indicated by models
While coastal areas will continue to have possibilities of light rains for the next couple of days it appears the chance of heavy rains is slowly subsiding though isolated places in South Tamil Nadu could stand a chance of some heavy spell later in the day today. With the Trough of Low weakening and shifting further west moving across GOM these areas in South TN stand a chance for some heavy spell at times. Though overall the heavier spells will slow down from today with possibly rains easing completely from 12th January.
Looking at the wind charts there is a faint possibility of one or two places record a short heavy spell of rains during the early hours between Chennai & Puducherry Latitude though we need to see if this indeed translates in reality.
